The IR-1 visa — short for “immediate relative” green card — is issued to the foreign spouse of a U.S. citizen if the couple have been married for two years or more. This is known as a “permanent green card” and is valid for 10 years, with the option to renew it.

The IR-1 visa is different to the CR-1 (“conditional” green card), a temporary visa for spouses who have been married for less than two years.

There are no yearly caps for immediate relative green cards, meaning the spouse of a U.S. citizen will not need to wait until a green card becomes available.
