A Travel Advisory is an official warning statement issued by the US Department of State to provide information about the safety of traveling to or visiting specific foreign countries. The purpose is to allow US travelers to make informed decisions about traveling to particular destinations, and to help travelers prepare adequately for what may be encountered on their trip. Travelers are encouraged to participate in the free service known as the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) before traveling, so they are notified of any advisories that may arise during their trip.
The DOS has an interactive map which shows the current levels of concern throughout the world for American travelers.
