The Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) is a free service that allows U.S. citizens traveling or living abroad to receive the latest security updates from the nearest US Embassy or consulate. The U.S. Department of State encourages all the travelers to sign up before departing on a trip.
How does Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) work?
STEP registrants will receive the latest safety and security information for their destination country, so they can make informed decisions about travel.
The information you provide enables the embassy or consulate to contact you in an emergency. In the event that there's a crisis in that country, STEP will attempt to help US citizens with issues and protocol.
How to Register for STEP?
- Create a account at STEP official website. You will provide basic personal information and emergency contacts in this step.
- Add an upcoming trip or residence abroad. You will select the nearest consulate where you will be staying and the dates of staying.
- Read the information for your specific country and follow the instructions. Once the country is selected, STEP will provide the current travel advisory for this country and how to contact the Department of State in that country.
