Applicants for adjustment of status may be required to attend an interview with a USCIS case officer. The purpose of the interview is to ensure that all the information in the application is correct and up to date. If any discrepancies have been noted in the filed documentation, they will also be addressed.
In General
- Show up early for the interview
- Be sure to review all submitted paperwork
- Dress professionally
- Answer all questions honestly. If you don’t know the answer to a specific question, say you don’t know.
Documentation
Applicants attending interviews should have the following documents in their possession:
- Copies of all documents initially submitted with form I-485
- Original birth and/or marriage certificates
- Original entry documents
- Passport (needed for temporary green card stamp)
- Copies of tax records
- Copies of household utility bills
- Copies of pay stubs
- Any other documentation showing change in life situations
Interpreter
If the applicant is not comfortable with his or her English ability, they are allowed to bring an interpreter to assist them during the interview. The interpreter must have government-issued identification and take an oath before the process begins. Ideally, the USCIS would like to see disinterested third parties acting as interpreters. Despite this, the case officer has the discretion to allow a friend or relative to translate.
